It seems to be the bigger the dog, the shorter the lifespan.
I don't have a G-Dane, but I have a 4yrold Mastiff. Size is only a problem if you make it one. Big dogs need to be taught from the start NOT TO JUMP!! even as a puppy, because what might be cute for a 15kg puppy, it's not so nice when a 60kg dog knocks you over.
With big dogs you have to be aware of their excercise routine and diet especially as a 'teenager'. Food needs to be high in calcium, because they grow so fast. Excercise needs to be relaxed or not too high impact. Walking/swimming are great, but ball chasing not so good.
Make sure you get proper vet checks on puppy and parents looking especially at hips etc.
Worming/Desexing..... are all more expensive.
My dog - 60kg eats a 25kg bag of dogfood ($35) a f/night plus bones and the kids leftovers.
She is not fat for her size.
The only downside for us in having a big dog is seperating the yard, into front & back. Out friends stopped dropping by because of her, even though she is the sweetest dog.
The other problem we have is my young children, her and the staircase dont mix well together, all racing each other to the top.
Good luck, hope Ive helped.
