Puppies and small children

Posted 171 days ago

We have just bought a 9 week old golden retriever and also have a 20month old. The puppy seems to be trying to dominate over the child and as the child is not yet ready to stand her ground is there anything we can do to enforce that the child is higher in the order than the dog is?

Is it also okay to give the puppy weetbix and puppy milk for breakfast as she doesn't seem to like her dry food of a morning even if i do mix it with some warm water?

Thanks for any suggestions you may have

I had the same problem, with a lab pup. The puppy was too excited, and energetic for my son, 12 mths. It didn't last long, when the puppy grew taller, able to 'kiss' my son, she wasnt jumping/pushing so much. Within a few months - and some obedience lessons they were fine together, two years later they are great friends.

Puppys are great at body language, the pup will soon realise who is higher on the chain, especially if you exaggerate preference for your child.

My parents used to breed G/Retrievers, and their first food was always weetbix, but watch the waistline!!!!

Take it to some obediance lessons, it will eventually learn that it is not the alpha dog.
