Reputable Breeders VS Puppy farms

Posted 536 days ago

It has come to my attention that Don Burke is claiming Cross Bred dogs from puppy farms are healthy than pedigree dogs from ethical breeders.
I'll give just one of many case scenarios.
Say for instance that you've decided that a labradoodle (Lab x poodle) is the dog for you.
If both mum and dad don't have good hip scores, you'll be buying a dog that will cost thousands of dollars in Vet bills.
A registered ethical breeder will spend heaps of money on health testing their breeding stock. And more often than not, the dogs are spoilt and sleep on the bed etc.
Puppy farm dogs usually live in apauling conditions without socialization. Basically a lots live in similar conditions as battery hens. And when they can no longer produce, they are destroyed.
As a registered breeder of Toy Poodles, I challenge Don Burke to come and visit my home to see how healthy, happy and spoilt my dogs are, but I doubt that will ever happen.
Not all registered breeders are like me and many dogs also live in appaulling conditions.
When purchasing any dog/pup, one really should visit the place where they are buying their dog and make sure that the parents of the dogs are living in conditions that you think are good for the dogs.
Never, ever buy a dog without knowing the background of the parents, and always make sure you get to see at least the mother of the pups.
And the biggest no no is to buy one from a pet shop. God only knows what you're actually getting. Most come from horrible puppy farms, and god knows what happens to them after they lose the cute factor. The pound is where I'm guessing.
Also, check out the pound and have a look for yourself at how many of these dogs are cross bred "Designer Dogs"

There is nothing wrong with a bit of predictability in buying a pedigree dog from the right breeder, at least at the end of the day, you have a general idea that the dog is going to turn out something like their parents.

Buying a crossbred, especially without seeing parents and not knowing their background is a recipe for disaster.

i am a registered breeder of chihuahuas and we are ethical like poodiful.

Petshop designer breeds come from puppy farms, farms who house their dogs on chook wire 24 hours a day with no air-conditioning in tin sheds. the farmes admitted to using a hammer to kill the dogs they no longer need in breeding. these dogs aren't socialised with humans so are fearful of them, they are in cages all their lives being bred every heat to make money for these people. one other farmer in gippsland in wellington shire area, breeds up 1500 pups a year to sell to petshops. he is the largest in Australia and the council have said it is no different to breeding up these dogs to livestock. meanwhile there are 200,000 dogs of these designer breeds mainly put down each year.

we know about puppy farms because we live right next to a few. we've been fighting to shut these mongrels (humans) down who are selfish and dn't care about the animals just how much money they can make. meanwhile they are burdening our society and filling up shelters with millions of dogs that can't find a home.

designer breeds/mongrel dogs being bred in these farms are falling short of expectations for buyers because like all dogs no matter whether pure or cross suffer from genetic problems. the difference is, with a cross breed you cannot trace problems in pedigrees so therefore you are dealing with large sets of random genes in several breeds.

cross breed dogs comes from pedigrees so how are cross breeds more healthy? they are not. cross breeds can't be tested for genetic faults unique to that breed becaue they have several breeds within them and so many genes.

it is up to the breeder with skill and ethics to breed sound healthy dogs and you cannot do that with mongrel dogs. that is why a mongrel /designer breed is inferior to a well bred pedigree dog.

also breeders need to be screened, farmers exist in pedigree circles as well as cross breed circles.

quite often it is family breeders (backyarders) who breed pups and they are breeding dogs illegally as most councils require dogs to be desexed not bred for profit.

if a breeder breeds for profit steer clear look elsewhere as dogs should be bred with health in the fore front and only the best healthy specimens should be bred selectively, dogs should be bred to improve a breed not a persons bank account!

it is cruel to cut corners breeding dogs and it is cruel to kris cross breeds with no forethought no research just $$$

Our local council is actively chasing up these illegal backyard breeders and rightly so. Council employees respond to ads for puppies in local papers and then follow up on these so called breeders. This is especially so because of the number of people still breeding restricted breeds. Hopefully more councils will take up this challenge.

It is heartbreaking to think of the conditions that thousands of dogs and puppies are kept in by these cruel money grabbing people with no thought for the consequences of this type of breeding.

I attended a Tribunal hearing case once where a lady was claiming damages for a puppy she had bought through one of these illegal breeders. The puppy was sick and cost the buyer an absolute fortune in medical bills which sadly resulted in the poor puppy having to be put down.

I agree wholeheartedly with Poodiful regarding - knowing where your dog comes from, check out the place, the parents of the dog etc.

As for puppies being sold in pet shops - When on earth are they going to ban this disgusting practise?

Having a rescue shelter I love the philosophy..Adopt, don't shop. I would love to see all animals sold only by reputable breeders direct and that pet shops have no animal sales whatsoever. Most pet shop workers, the ones I have met anyway, have no idea where the animal is from or even how to care for it. I recently went to a pet shop which was selling ferrets. I asked the young girl at the counter what to feed it. She said..I think they eat rabbit food!I was horrified as they are strict carnivours. It's this type of misinformation that causes a lot of pets to be dumped and abandoned. At least with a good breeder you can get follow up help.Next time you're at a pet shop..ask to see the parents of that little puppy for sale. I bet you don't get to see it.

I live near a old man who breeds dogs.there must be at least 60 to 100 dogs in a large shed I dont know how many as you cant see them.they bark all the time.I have rang the RSPCA and they dont seem to be that concerned.I know its bad in there and I have heard bad things about it.This man wouldnt spend money on the health of the dogs so the puppies could have alsorts of problems. How are the puppies sold?are they sold in pet shops?whats happens if they are not sold,do they go back to the breeder so they can start a life of having babies or are they sent to GOD? I will put in more complaints and see what happens.my heart breaks when i hear them .
