Cats on MY Property

Posted 694 days ago

I AM NOT A CAT LOVER SORRY.I have the problem of irresponsible cat owners in my street, who have no regard for other peoples property and let their cats go wherever they want and they poo in my Vegetable garden which is SO DIGUSTING, we grow veges to eat and yet I have found cat poo in it.
My dog is not allowed to roam and go on neighbours property yet cats can.
I think cats should have the same rules as dogs. As they also kill birds and wildlife and I think 99% of cat owners have no idea where their cats have been all day or night, until they come home wanting food.
NOW I need something to put around my vege patch to keep other peoples cats out of my yard and vege patch. Hmmm doesn't seem right does it.
Cheers Flossy

I used to have a problem with a neighbours cat getting onto my avairies in the night, I ran an electric fence around the top of the avairies and never had cat problems again. Maybe you could do the same around your vegie garden!

I hate cats, I put them in the same category as rats and mice and foxes, unfortuneately not too many share that view.

Just a suggestion, but try talking to the council, make a formal complaint, in Perth the Wanneroo council actually offered the use of cat traps, got all the moggie owners going, as you can imagine, irresponsible people, but to make a strong stand against these irresponsible owners is the way to deal with it, same with incessantly barking dogs.

We don't have to endure these situations, here on the Sunshine Coast the council is having a drive on cat and dog desexing and micro-chipping, offering cheaper registration for those who do it, so I would tackle this battle through your local council, if you don't make a stand, no one else will.

If you do, you might be surprised by the support you get. There'll be some flack too, but you just flick that off, wind in the face.

Cats should be declared vermin. Tell 'em that and watch the fun!

Put out a can of sardines with a packet of laxettes melted through them.
They will be that busy in their own yard that they wont have time to go into your yard, and will think twice before they visit again.

Why not planting trees, shrubs and plants that repel cats (and other animals)? Here is a link to an artile from Cat World and I know there are lots of other articles and tips out there ...

Hi Flossy,
I agree with you... its not right! I've spent quite a lot of money trying to keep neighbouring cats out of my yard and nothing has worked so far. Don't bother using ultrasonic devices, I have both the hand held gun and units that you stake into the ground and they have no effect whatsoever! The cats just twitch their ears and completely ignore it! I've sprayed them several times with the garden hose to no avail. I haven't used any of the products you scatter on the ground because I've heard that they have no effect either not to mention the high maintenance of having to constantly reapply. I don't want to hurt these cats but when they poo on my lawn, spray urine all over the place, break my pots when they knock them over, attack our family pets (guinea pigs), kill some of the few birds that visit my yard and fight constantly I can understand why some people take more drastic measures.
My next plan of action is to install fence spikes, as the biggest offender lives behind us. The irresponsible owner of this particular cat has been spoken to on several occasions and doesn't care less about what the cat does.
As for your vegie patch, I have heard planting the herbs - Rue and Dogbane is meant to deter cats but don't hold me to that. Love the electric fence idea but not sure how much that would cost to set up... it would certainly stop them I'm sure. Hope you come up with a resolution!
Good Luck!

I do understand what you are all saying...im hearing ya.....i also have a BIG cat problem in our street ive seen about 70 different cats and still counting.....Me myself is a cat lover i cant say its the cats fault cause its not the blame is the owners of them all i have a cat and she is kept in doors..i know there is a cat curfew there suppose to be locked up at 6pm...im not sure how you would fix the problem ethier the electric fence idea or enclosure it completely in with chicken wire like a fernery...you can hire cat traps and catch them and drop off at the pound. I wish you luck....

Treat cats pests and harmful animals, of course is not correct. They have the right to life like any other animal. I think that misunderstandings arise primarily because of the owners of these animals. Owners of cats should create for their pets such conditions that they do not cause inconvenience to other people. This is a problem. The people themselves to animals are often treated as toys. Play - you can throw. And the animals are in no way guilty. We create our own problems.

yep can relate to the cat problem. I have resorted to a chicken wire enclosure for the vegies. Cats are lazy critters and will head for any soft ground before digging there own, if your still on talking terms with your neighbour you could suggest they dig over a patch of ground near the fence where the offender usually comes over

I sympathise completely. Being a cat owner (let me rephrase that, a willing servant of the cat for mutual benefit) I can understand how unhappy you are about little presents being left in your vege patch.
Cat and dog poo is of no benefit nutritionally for growing veges. Did you know that cats are smarter than dogs? It's a little known fact.
So when you lay your traps, your electrified fences and your poisoned food, it's probably be going to be some dumb dog who walks into them.
Cats have enough sense not to poo in their own place.

Hi,
Local council should impose compulsary boundaries for cats
Cats should have the same rules as dogs.
Cats should be on their own property 24 hrs a day.
Regards .
