RE: Chicken feeder Posted 163 days ago I havent tried one yet but I used a plastic trough from a farming supply outlet - it has a grate on the top where the chooks can peck through - I nailed it to a wide piece of wood so they dont tip it over. would be interested to hear from anyone that has also tried the grandpa feeder! |

RE: Chicken feeder Posted 157 days ago i have just started using "Grandpas Chicken feeder" and my chickens were nervous for about half an hour then started slowly picking the pellets from it. By the end of the day it was not a problem. I heard Don speak of getting the right pellets so i used barastoc golden yolk which he has recommended and my chickens seemed to love them more than fearing the feeder. |

RE: Chicken feeder Posted 107 days ago Hi Dawn52 - Another thought on the feeder as my friend has now bought one. His chickens were ok with the lid ajar as instructed for the week. But when it was time for it to be closed the lid banged and the chickens were startled and wouldn't use it. So we tightened the nuts and bolts so the lid didn't bang. it lowered slowly and as soon as we did that no worries... Also with the feed they need to get used to them. If your chcikens are still pullets the pellets my be too large in that case use the pullet grower for awhile . good luck |

RE: Chicken feeder Posted 78 days ago I had a tin feeder and hung it from the roof just high enough so it would float. Chickens were fine with it. Now (new chicks - new home - new state etc). I couldn't find the one I had in Qld so bought a pale blue plastic feeder which had slots on the base. I purchased 7 week old Isa Browns and although they are still flighty with me have had no problem with the feeder. I also have water in the hen-house for them at night as they are locked in. They are about 13 weeks old now. Lovely birds |
