RE: on-site stormwater detention policies

Elle,
On site detention is required to control the volume of water discharging from your property into a council or authorities stormwater system be it a pipe system, watercourse or creek etc.
They require the developer to do this because mostly their infrastructures can not cope.
You can retain part of your 35,000ltrs for what is called Harvest Water which is used to water or irrigate gardens. It can also be used for toilet flushing, car washing etc.
When you submitted your Develpoment Application to Council you should have submitted a Stormwater Management Plan produced by a qualified Hydraulic Consultant, if not contact me and I'll send you the names of some good Consultants or if you like you can look them up in the Yellow Pages under Hydraulic Consultants.
You must have quite a large catchment area for the Council to require 35,000ltr storage.
I would be very surprised if Council wavered the Detention requirements.
