bull ants

Posted 200 days ago

Help! Bull ants along driveway fence where I want to plant
camellias. Anyone know how to work around these
insects without being attacked? They swarm the driveway
on hot summer nights and I'm concerned for visitors. How can
I deflect them?

I have heard the use of boric acid dust used carefully. Fire down their entrance hole. Boiling water. Either way spray yourself with some sort of personal insecticide before you attack. Good luck.

Did you want to kill them? If so, then I recommend a full kettle of boiling water straight into the hole. It works everytime for me. Occasionally a nest needs a second treatment, but that's rare. I don't think anything will stop them attacking you otherwise, they are just so ferocious & they seem to love taking us on, even when we are so much bigger than them!

If you want to kill them, wait till night time when all ants are in the nest, then pour petrol down the hole, it will suffocate them.

I think that environmentally the boiling water is a bit less damaging (& way less expensive). My partner poured petrol into one of ours & it didn't work as well, plus it has affected the ground for growing anything since.

Thanks Pomolo and Diza. Will try the boiling water on those pesky bull ants real soon. Seems like the perfect solution for not harming the environment.

The Bull Ants have been dispatched! Thanks to the great advice on boiling water. It has been most successful, though I did wonder at the amount of water needed. The nests were actually horizontal, traveling beneath next door's concrete driveway. This meant I had to sort of flood the level, as pouring into the entrance just did not work. Made me feel very mean indeed but the job is done. Thanks again keen gardeners!
