Houseplants

Posted 846 days ago

I am going away for 3 weeks over Xmas and have no-one that I can ask to look after my potted houseplants for me. Does anyone have suggestions on how to stop my plants dying of thirst while shut up in a hot house for the time I am away? It has been suggested to me that I sit them in a few inches of water in the bath tub, but Im afraid of causing root rot....

I don't know whether it would be enough but you could mix in some water crystals with their potting mix http://www.bunnings.com.au/sustainability_save-water_wa
ter-storage-crystals.aspx

Sitting them in water...maybe not optimal. Give them a good soak in a bucket of water with a few drops of dishwashing detergent and a little seasol mixed in, let them drain off, and cover the soil with damp newspaper. Move them away from any direct sunlight. That should see them through. A small fan left running on low will give some air circulation, but a lot of folks [ me included] would feel a bit uneasy leaving anything electrical running like that.
