Treated Pine Planter Box

Posted 164 days ago

I want to build a large planter box for tomatoes. If I build from treated pine boards on a slotted steel frame, will it be safe to eat the fruit?

If so, what sort of lining would make it safe?

Or should I just use a different material?

The manufacturers of treated pine say that it's fine to use properly treated pine for planter boxes intended to be used for growing food. But I guess it's in there interest to back their product. I'm sure they wouldn't want to intentionally harm anyone either.
There's supposed to be some sort of safer version of treated pine available these days.
My instinct is err on the side of caution and use hardwood or masonary products. Avoiding all timber ensures no termites.

I watched a gardening program once, where they used treated sleepers but covered the sides with plastic so leaching into the vegies couldn't happen, but they left the bottom open, so the water draind through.
