herbs and pests

Posted 200 days ago

I was wondering how to get rid of pests off my herbs, I'm only a beginner herb grower, but already my bazil has started to have visitors so I need a safe way to get rid of them as I would really like my hubby to be able to use my herbs in further dishes he cooks up.

It really depends on the specific pests doing your herbs over. If it's aphids then hose them of. Ladybirds eat aphids so you don't want to get rid of the ladybirds as well.

Pyrethrum is a contact spray to get rid of pests. It's a natural spray. Dipel is an organic spray to kill the same bugs.

Just be sure you aren't killing the good bugs because of a few bad ones.

Pomolo's right about the pyrethrum.

The Dipel which he mentions controls caterpillars. It's a harmless (to humans and bees) bacteria which ruins the caterpillar's appetite and stops them munching. Another product by Yates, called Success, is similar to Dipel.

With plants like basil, I also find it best to grow lots of little crops rapidly, giving them plenty of water, liquid food and sunshine, rather than trying to rely on one or two plants lasting you for several months. It's also much easier and cheaper to do the "lots of little crops" method by sowing seed, rather than by planting seedlings. Just scatter some seed in one spot, and when it has come up and looks like it's underway and getting to a good size, scatter a bit more seed somewhere else, so you have young, fresh crops coming along about six weeks apart.
