elkhorn dividing

Posted 886 days ago

I have an elk horn which has several "pups" growing down and starting to develop below the board they are attached to. I would like to be able to divide these and start new ones. I do not know how to go about this and am worried that I may damage the whole plant.
Can someone direct me as to how I go about dividing the plants?

Removing pups should not affect the main plant.
In worst case scenario "pup" will die.

You might just want to wait bit longer for "pup" to be bigger.

As side note, I always wandered.
If plants are sold with special registration stickers and then get multiplied, how to prove to authorities that they were propagated, not collected somewhere?

I know that scientific tests would prove origin and parent, but if parent happens to die and original board is discarded?

I never heard of anybody being fined, but maybe because of this reason I never purchased one.

I think it's only staghorns that they register, not elks. To remove pups, gently pull off, doesn't seem to hurt the parent.I use stockings to put onto another tree branch. I'm often taking pups off as its getting too large.
