Cutting large glass bottles

Posted 708 days ago

Hi All
I would like to cut the tops off some large glass bottles what is the best method to do this.
O can remember many years ago I used string tied around the cut area soaked in kerosene litht then after burning for a while than the bottle dropped into cold water.
What is your method for making nice clean cuts.
Ray .

I heard of burning string and dunking in cold water too. Never did it myself thou.

You might try it first on some bottles that go to recycling, so you get the grip on how to do it successfully.

I noticed that Chili sauce bottles seem to be much heavier wall than oil bottles, but any bottle will be a good starting point.

Let us know how it went?

G'day Ray, way back when the earth was still cooling, my ol' Dad showed us kids that trick with the string. Raised in SA, they used to have those quart beer bottles, it worked on them, although for the life of me I have no idea why he would've wanted to cut them off.

After cutting the edges were pretty sharp.

I guess back then civilisation wasn't buried in plastic containers.

The trick was to get the string straight, especially at the knot, to get a clean cut.

I don't know if that will work today, glass may no longer have the quality of "the good old days"

There are glass cutters, a hand held wheel that cuts it, you could look into that as well.

Hi,we also used the burning string method, then we rubbed the glass with an oil-stone (used to sharpen tools ect) This did an excellent job on glass as we used some of them as drinking vessels.
