Whats your favorite perfumed plant

Posted 429 days ago

Whats your favorite "perfumed" plant and why.

Mine is Daphne.

I just love the perfume it has. I have it planted in numerous places around my garden

It always reminds me of my early childhood at my grandmothers house. She had it growing along her front verander and even at that early age i thought it was just so lovely to smell

I have a red rose that I have forgotten the name of. It is richly scented and smells just like the rose oils used in perfumes. It may be the lincoln rose? I'ts absolutely gorgeous, and looks stunning too. Second to the rose is lavender.

I also love the smell of citrus flowers when they are out - they give you an uplifted feeling.

Jasmine and golden wattle have a great scent but unfortunately they both set off my hayfever badly.

PS - The rose - One time I was having a lot of trouble relaxing and was very tired and needed to sleep. My very considerate, loving (and romantic) husband strewed our bed with the petals of the peace rose, within no time at all I had settled enough to have my much needed sleep - their scent had helped to relax me.

I like to use lavender oil on a hanky to help sooth a congested nose.

Mmmmm just thinking about scented flowers is nice.
I love daphne, roses , lavender and gardenias. My gardenias put out one or two flowers recently and that was enough to parfume my front, albeit small garden. I am hoping that there are more to follow! Does anyone know when they are due to flower in sydney?

Hi BudKrone
Would those flowers you've mentioned grow well in SW NSW? I'm looking for new ideas to add scented plants to my back garden, once my wind breaks are better established. I'm not familiar with those plants you've mentioned. (I will be checking them up on net when I have the time).

I love the smell of Daphnes and Gardenias, but unfortunately don't have anywhere I can grow them just yet.

If there are any suggestions anyone can make for scented plants (other than the rose, which I already have) for an open, full sun all day, windy, and slightly sloped position - that gets frost in the winter and burning heat in the summer - I'll be appreciative. I need something that doesn't need a lot of watering.

Also - is it really a good idea of mine to plant lots of different kinds of scented plants in the same garden area? Or would the scents end up mingling too much and tend to overpower each other?

Hi There,
My fav scented plant is a rose called Blue Moon. I have planted several bushes along my front window so that the scent goes thru the whole house! Although Mister Lincoln rose is almost as good! A rose is not a rose unles it has a scent!

Maybe you could grow petunias, their scent on a warm summer night is lovely, they are hardy and don't need much water and make a lovely show.

Where do you stop- Daphne, Jasmine, Gardenias, frangipani,
evening primrose, petunias, some acacias. I would have to ad freshly cut lawn though not a perfumed plant - but had to ad it.

Cestrum nocturnum(night jasmine) beyond a doubt. It flowers in flushes throughout summer and well into winter on older plants, my four year old bush is still putting out sprays of flowers now.

The flowers are subtle, the perfume is not, it will perfume your house if the breeze is right and you can detect it a 100metres away, again, if the breeze is right.

I don't think port wine magnolia (Michelia figo?) or Citrus blossom has been mentioned either. Indeed if I'm planting a perfumed garden i use the night jasmine, Jasmine officianalis and polyanthum, citrus, michelia, Gardenia, because they all are complimentary in having a glossy, pointy, leaf. Roses are quite suitable as well.

Geraldton Wax. It is a beautiful lemony scent when you crush the flowers.
My next favoutite 'garden smell' is new rain.

Bud Krone said (above):

Bud forgot to add that if you have experienced the smell of these flowers you've come close to knowing what it is to die. These are all those "carrion-flowers" which smell like rotting dead meat, to attract flies for pollination. Nice work, Bud! Remind me not to visit your garden!

On a more fragrant note, I love scented foliage. Some favourites to be near are rosemary, lemon myrtle and basil. It's nice to get some lovely scent from these plants wafting up as you move among plants while doing simple gardening jobs such as weeding or deadheading flowers.

Gardinia by a long way. It is absolutely seductive. I fell in love when I went to a strangers house to look at a baby grand piano I had wanted to buy since childhood. There was a perfectly manicured hedge of gardinias down both sides of the driveway in full flower. It was early evening in summer, and I believe it was the first time I had experienced the scent of the gardinia.

The lady of the house cut a few flowers for me to take home, and I held on to them as she played Claire de Lune, the scent completely filled the room, the whole scene was so completely surreal to me, I will never forget it. I purchased the piano. Unfortunately despite several attempts I have never succeeded in growing gardinias myself.
