Sensitive weed - any suggestions?

Posted 1253 days ago

Hi,
I'm fairly new to Mackay and I've come across this sensitive weed which I've never really seen before. It seems to be quite hardy really, and I'm wondering if anyone has any clues as to how I can easily get rid of it.
The sensitive weed grows in the lawn and has dark green leaves that curl up if you touch them, as well as lots of little thorns which make it interesting when you try to pull them out. It gets little pink/purple pompom flowers on them.
I've tried pulling a fair few out with some tools and gloves on, but I can't get rid of them fast enough. A friend suggested vinegar, but I don't think that had much effect.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Kelly

I recommend that you buy a Yates weeding brush. It's a proven product for me and I use it on weeds anywhere in my garden but it's especially good for weeds in the lawn. Use a diluted glyphosate solution and just dab the brush on the foliage of the weeds in question. Works a treat and it saves your back as well. Cost about $40.

I asked my rellie in Cairns, she said all that worked was to pull it out. the poisons they used didn't work. But there may be other poisons out there that will. Sorry I couldn't help.

Hi,
Thanks for all of your responses. I will give the glyphosate a go. I'll have to check and see what the concoction was that I tried on it before, but at this point, I'll give anything a go because it seems to spread faster than I can pull it out! If only there were more hours in the day...
Thanks again for your help. I really appreciate it.
Have a great weekend!
Kelly :)

Hi there, I have just moved from Mackay to Sarina Beach and we too have an outbreak of it there. I have been told that the only stuff that will touch it is Starane. You can get it from Elders or Mackay Rural Supplies and it is about $109 for 1 ltr!

Jolene,
Have you tried the Starane? Would be interested in the outcome.
Thanks Colleen.

Vinegar can be a good weed killer...It needs to be applied straight in very hot sunny weather...weeds curl up and die.
Starane is a very good weedicide.
