Sugar Cane Mulch

Posted 645 days ago

I have recently created some new garden beds and have used sugar cane mulch extensively. There are now 100's (1000's?) of tiny flying insects hovering over the beds. Does anybody have any ideas on what they are and how to treat them or the mulch?

I'd guess Vinegar flies, attracted by the residuals in the mulch. Not really a problem. They don't bite you or your fruit/veg. They should go away after the mulch stops "fermenting". Sugarcane mulch is the only one I use, and that's been my experience with them. If you really must "off" them, lebaycid or a pyrethrum surface spray will kill them, but not the larvae. Allow for seven-day life cycle. Not really worth the effort, though. Hope this helps a bit.
