Possums in your garden

Posted 635 days ago

Since moving into Ferntree Gully, Victoria, I have been battling possum problems. The back yard is full of them and after doing everything I could think of (including wrapping the trunks of my trees and shrubs in stiff, shiny black plastic) I found the only way to have a garden is to get chicken wire and tomato stakes, and build fences around every garden bed! My son says it looks like Fort Knox (which is apt because I live in Knox Shire) but at least I have a garden. The wire is not really noticeable, and I have put plastic spikes along the fence tops at the rear of each bed(spikes available at Bunnings).
As the neighbour's trees overhang my property and possums jump, I had a chicken wire fence built up on the roof to stop the critters leaping into my magnolia tree. However, I still don't get any apricots or peaches in summer - guess I have to let them amuse themselves somehow! Last year they ate every last fruit AND leaf off the lemon tree! Lemons, yet? I hope they got stomache ache!!
Also, you wouldn't believe how noisy they are at night - one would think there was a battalion of hob-nailed booted soldiers running over the roof. And the language is appalling as the possies yell obscenities at each other.
Does anyone else have possum problems and if so, what did you do about it?

I know that some people leave out food that possums can eat in the hope that they will leave everything else alone. It sounds as though you have an army of them so perhaps expert help is advisable.

Have you spoken to your local council about it? Some councils supply traps to catch possums for relocation. I'm not sure that this is accepted as due care now though

we have the same problem here in Adelaide, we have had to cage our fruit trees up, they also ate our rhubarb leaves and they are supposed to be poisonous.

If possums are damaging ornamental plants or fruit in your garden then build a floppy fence around the garden. Use 80cm wide, heavily galvanized chicken wire, bury the bottom 20 cm and support the remainder on vertical lengths of flexible, high-tensile fencing wire. Bend the wire to curve the upper section outwards. When the possum attempts to climb the fence it will bend over and then spring back.
