Sick gum tree?

Posted 602 days ago

Hi,

I live in Western Australia and have a very large gum tree on my front council verge. I don't know its name but it can be described as: about 100' tall; long medium trunk; produces and drops a small hard gumnut (like seeds), as well as small branches; lots of leaves that die off and fall to the ground and a full and rounded top with lots of leaves and branches. I've been told it's native to the eastern coast line of Australia and is deemed to be a 'pest' in that environment.

About 2 months ago it began oozing a red/black gum substance initially from a small cack halfway up the trunk. Currently, one half of the tree is cracking and oozing this substance (which hardens), with small to medium cracks on the base trunk and also spreading up the tree. There is also a very large amount of the sap at the base of the tree, from the oozing. The tree appears to be alive as the leaves are green on the outer branches.

Will this settle down or will the tree continue to deteriorate?

Is the tree putting our property in danger?

I've searched the Internet but cannot find an explanation. I hope someone can help me and advise me on the best course of action.

Contact an arbourist and have him take a look at the tree if you're worried.
