Water Logged Soil

Posted 584 days ago

After recently planting out our new houses front garden, I have discovered that our garden beds are so water logged rivers of water run from them.
I have used a premium soil mix and covered with a bark mulch which has helped soak some of the water up but I still have major issues.
Is there something that I can do to dry out the soil?
I am worried that the plants (weeping apricot & standard roses) will die due to the soil being too wet.
Can anyone help?

The only thing I can suggest is that you need to gently slope your garden beds, so that any excess water will drain away and if necessary make a channel to your nearest drain outlet where the water can drain away. We had to do exactly this, as our garden beds used to flood in heavy rain, but now its not a problem.

StuK i had the exact problem as you, the only way was to build a drain underneath. yes there was alot of digging infact a 5m x 0.5mx0.5m. rectangle. i bought some recycled concrete and also agro piping (pipe with holes) and speacial material to put around the pipe. i surrounded the pipe with recycled concrete and then put good quality garden mix on the top.

btw the pipe was then connected to a small drum of 1000l not much but always gets full no mater how heavy the rain is.

well the problem was fixed and was the only solution.

Water logging refers to the saturation of soil with water. Soil may be regarded as waterlogged when the water table of the groundwater is too high to conveniently permit an anticipated activity, like agriculture. From a gardening point of view, water logging is the process whereby the soil blocks off all water and is so hard it stops air getting in and it stops oxygen from getting in.
