RE: Backyard chikens Posted 74 days ago ARE YOU FEEDING YOU FOWLS A FOOD WITH CALCIUM IN IT TO PREVENT SOFT SHELLS??
HOW OLD ARE YOUR FOWLS & WHAT BREED ARE THEY??
I HAD A BYBRID VARIETY OF LAYER THAT DID THIS AND THEY WERE ONLY 3 YEARS OLD. I WAS TOLD BY A POULTRY FARMER THEY LAID SO MANY EGGS THEY WORE THEMSELVES OUT AND BECAME SUSEPTIBLE TO PROBLEMS OF THE REPRODUCTIVE TRACT. _________ |

RE: Backyard chikens Posted 71 days ago Once your chickens know what is inside its eggs you will have a hard tim trying to stop it from eating them.
Putting shellgritt somewhere for the chooks to scratch in will also help harden eggshells.
I think you need to find out from a vet/poultry expert what is wrong because they sound pretty sick. Even if you decide to replace them, because you don't want the next lot ending up the same.

RE: Backyard chickens Posted 6 days ago Re the soft eggs, it is due to calcium deficiency. Give the chooks some shellgrit in a container separate from their feed, that they can eat from whenever they wish.
As for the diarrhea, it sounds like a bacterial infection like salmonella or e coli. Without more details from you, I can't really say more, but having kept chooks before, I can suggest that you give the chook run and house a really good clean with antiseptic spray. Then start afresh with young healthy hens preferably from a free-range source. Worm them regularly with commercial worming liquid available from feed stores or large pet supplier. Hope this helps. |
