Hi Rod
My cherry tomatoes are finished now - I let them go from last year and they were not looking good when I came back from a 2 month holiday over winter. Unfortunately I am the only gardener at home, my husband, who stayed at home, didn't look after them. I'm looking forward to some roma tomatoes coming up in the front garden, and a french sounding one that I always forget the name of. I'm expecting seedlings to come up from the seeds dropped from my neglected cherry tomatoes after a good drop of rain, once I've re established and refreshed the garden bed they were growing in.

Even the hard, dull, dry ground harbours life - which is brought to the surface with the fresh touch of drenching rain (or the humble watering can).

Hi Rod! What are you feeding your cherry tomatoes? My Apollo tomatoes aren't doing very well - I've just sprayed some Seasol and I remove the bottom branches, but they're still taking a while to grow. Do you grow from seed? I'm very new to the whole gardening thing so any advice you or (anyone) can give me would be much appreciated. Thanks

Goose, Seasol isn't a fertiliser, so it won't help that much (it's a soil conditioner, which means it helps plants to grow roots, so it is a good thing, but it might not be that terrific for tomatoes).

Try a liquid food such as Nitrosol or some kind of seaweed or fish-based liquid food. Good old Dynamic Lifter pellets, or cow manure would be great. If you're not fussed about organic gardening, even stuff like Thrive or Miracle Gro works fine.

Tomatoes are pretty greedy at first, so give them something, plus make sure the water supply is nice and even (ie, never any long dry stretches).

Good luck!

Hi rodh. I'm solving misstrish's prob. re Green Zebra tomatoes. They are ready to eat when they turn slightly yellow between the stripes. Also softer if you give them a gentle squeeze. They taste GREAT!Don't freak out when you cut one open. They are meant to be green inside.

Thanks Ozmac - I've given them some Dynamic Lifter and hopefully I'll see some good growth in the weeks to come. While at Bunnings, I noticed they also have Rooster Booster - does anyone know of this and how it compares with Dynamic Lifter for example?

Goose

I noticed the Rooster Booster at Bunnings, too. Rooster Booster has an official organic certification label (BFA) so it must be just pelletised chicken poo and nothing else, so that's a good thing. The 25kg bags of Dynamic Lifter also have the same BFA certification. I haven't tried Rooster Booster but it has to be pretty good if it's just pure chicken poo and so it's probably very similar to DL.
