Pruning giant Dosma

Posted 518 days ago

I have a huge Diosma. It's about 6ft tall and 8ft wide (thanks to the last people that lived here not looking after the garden at all!). The leaves only fill the outside to about 20cm thick and its got a big empty space underneath and on the side that doesn't face the sun.

Can I hard prune it, and how far can I go? I want to cut it back by at least a third and maybe even by half but don't want to kill it. Does anyone know if it would probably re-bloom?

There are still a lot of branches underneath and I'm prepared to have an ugly ball of sticks for a while if its gonna grow back.

(I'm not going to do anything to it until after summer as we've had some pretty crazy hot ones in the last few years!)

I might know this one, 'cause I'm in the process of doing the same thing. You'll need to only tip-prune with the shears about 4 inches in the old money, about every two or three months, depending on how vigorous it is at that time. They won't handle "man-pruning" as a rule.Slow and steady will do it.The side facing away from the sun jest ain't never gonna do nuthint.Hope this helps a bit.Oh...and happy Christmas.
