Golden Robinias as Noxious Weeds Posted 716 days ago Hello Forum Users
My mother is experiencing extreme problems with a neighbours Golden Robinias it has been ongoing for about a year. She discovered suckering roots all over her garden about a year ago and realised they were from the Golden Robinia next door. She is suffering from breast cancer and osteoarthritis and is very bent over. Dad died last year and she does all the work herself now. She had been digging out the roots but they go down forever. She has been poisoning them constantly with full strength glysophate to no avail. She continues to poison suckers and is now cutting to a strong root and apply the poison full strength or letting a sucker reach about 1-2 feet and poisoning then. The network of roots is so extensive they are literally absolutely everywhere. The neighbour (young and healthy) told her to just dig out the roots herself
The neighbours allowed two suckers to develop into full grown trees on their property it only took about two-three years for them to be taller than the parent tree. The property is a small suburban block.
Mum has kindly informed them of the problem but they refuse to cut down the parent tree. They have removed one of the offspring trees. They will not supply her with poison or pay the costs for ongoing poisoing by her.
She has rung the local Council to be passed on to the Environmental Protection Authority who passed her back to council. Being elderly and on her own she is feeling desolate wih no help available.
We have looked at your facts sheets and heard a caller on Saturday 20/2/2010 who had a similar problem but in the community there is no solution for this problem.
How does the community get these tress deemed noxious and eradicate them such as Pampas gress and umbrella tress were removed in previous decades?
This tree in question has also shot offspring in other yards which are rented and noone either cares or is informed enough to remove them so the problem is huge. The roots are extremely invasive.
Have other forum users had this problem and if so what did you do???
For other gardeners be aware these trees are being grown everywhere and the problems with them develops over a five to seven year period.
Any help appreciated.

RE: Golden Robinias as Noxious Weeds Posted 706 days ago Hiya Marybarbara, sorry to hear of your Mums troubles. Robinias of any type can cause problems with suckering. Unfortunately it's usually when they're stressed ie when they don't have enough water that this happens. I think the nursery industry is aware of the problem. I work at a responsible nursery and we actively warn people of the problem to an extent that we have a good half of our robinias from both this and last season still in stock (even if we see a person with one on a trolley we'll catch up to them to warn them). Our greenstock manager has made the decision not to stock them again even the Mop Top which remains popular. Our reason for discouraging customers from them is the fact that they are hard work due to suckering with horrible thorny shoots and if customers still want them the fact that they're one of the main problem trees with neighbour disputes. Unfortunately even if you do poison them with something like Tree and Blackberry Killer the tree is strong enough that they will probably still come back and throw up more suckers due to stress. And if it doesn't it can cause huge neighbourhood issues that are far worse than the thorny issue of the tree and suckers in the first place. Remember though that legally you are allowed and expected to send any issue from the parent plant ie prunings etc over the fence to where they came from - maybe if they have enough thorns sent over they will understand the situation. but if you can find common ground you will find your life easier. hope this helps |

RE: Golden Robinias as Noxious Weeds Posted 706 days ago Thanks Alirose,
Yes you reply is very helpful.
We live in the Newcastle NSW area and the nurseries here seem to sell the Robinias without any warning at all. They are literally everywhere! It it my belief they like to then stimulate their sales with the resultant weedkiller purchases!!
So thankfully you customers are very fortunate to receive your advice.
It's good to know the problems associated with these trees are being recognised.
Many thanks. |
