RE: Growing grass in clay soil Posted 721 days ago You need to throw down lots of Gypsum which is a clay breaker and then rotary hoe it in a few times this will break it up and make it crumbly and friable and the best lawn is Palmetto or Sir Walter Buffalo Grass |

RE: Growing grass in clay soil Posted 715 days ago I would agree with Maggi, as an old West Aussie, unless I'm mistaken and smitten with "old timers" you have that white clay up there, we have red stuff here, but similar, and I use lime to get the PH balance when needed. |

RE: Growing grass in clay soil Posted 703 days ago Thanks for replying. We have the red clay where we live but we are going to a seminar about Fertiliser and lime information day this weekend. |

RE: Growing grass in clay soil Posted 627 days ago I agree the Sir Walter Buffalo or Palmetto is the more durable, drought tolerant variety, but if you want a lush green lawn all year round, I would suggest removing a layer of clay and replacing it with some decent soil. We did this and our Palmetto is lush and green. Our neighbours also have Palmetto and they struggle, as in the summer months, it dries out very quickly. It always bounces back but needs a lot of watering. |
