ill Pittosporum Tenuifolium

Posted 426 days ago

We have a huge hedge of Pittosporum in our back yard. They are in a C shape against the fences of our yard and are around 10ft high. The hedge is 5 years old. The leaves in the top are going a rust colour and some are falling off. We have lost one of these trees and have replanted it, it was going well but is not showing the same signs as the others. New growth is coming and some of it is curling and then dying. Some of the branches are also sparce. Our summer was very hot and we tried to keep the water up to them. We have also had quite a bit of rain so we are hoping this will help. We have checked the Ph of the soil and added lime. I have also put seasol on all the trees which i will repeat again soon. We had a nursery man come and advised we cut 2ft out of the trees (which we will do when the frost goes). The trees have also had aphids and mealy bug in the past which we have sprayed with confidor.
Can someone give us some advise as we do not want to lose this lovely hedge.

Are you sure the discoloration of the leaves isn't caused by the cold weather or even frost? I have seen this pittosporun growing but I haven't ever grown one so this is just general advice I'm offering.

I know it needs good drainage. Maybe it getting waterlogged if you have had a lot of rain. The other thing I wanted to say is use a pest oil product to kill off aphids and mealy bugs. Confidor is a pretty bad chemical and probably a bit of over kill in the case of aphids etc.

We have a hedge of 6 Pittosporum Tenuifolium (Silver Sheen) along a side fence. They are a beautiful hedge and provide privacy and shade to that side of the house. We are finding, however, that all the leaves on the branches leaning over the fence are discolouring(turning yellow) and dying. I am concerned that the hedge is dying - do these plants only have a limited life span? Also, do they send up suckers that you could grow more from? Is there any disease that affects these plants?

Thanks!
