pumpkin

Posted 280 days ago

I have never cultivated a pumpkin successfully and this year was no different. There were no female flowers on any vine (seeds bought from very reputable suppliers). Any suggestions for next year?
Incidentally, I have a huge pumpkin growing under the bird feeder, which has developed from a stray bird seed,so I can't claim it!!

Are you saying that you never ever get any female flowers at all? I have never heard of pumpkin vines being that bad. I know you can get a lot of male flowers before the female ones even start to appear but to never ever see one is very unusual.

It is said that if you nip the tips off the runners it will force the female flowers to hurry along but I don't know if it will make them happen for you.

You can claim the vine under the bird feeder as your own. It wouldn't be there if you hadn't allowed it grow where it is. Has if got pumpkins on?

I have been over run by pumpkin, I only planted 2 one a kent and the other a butternut ( which is technically a swede) anyways I now have 6 pumpkin plants growing from my compost heap. All are producing pumpkins. I know they like rich organic soil and the female flowers come weeks after the male flowers. I too thought i only had male flowers but it just takes a bit longer for the females to emerge. I would give heaps of dynamic lifter and water and snip off the ends and see what happens. Best of luck, Maybe next year put them in full sun and plant in a previous compost pile ???
