Does anyone know anything about Chestnut trees? Posted 303 days ago I had planted a Chestnut tree last year and it was growing beautifully until a few days of hot and humid weather withered it's leaves about Christmas time. I don't know whether the tree has been killed or not. Will I have to wait till next spring to see if the chestnut tree has survived the heat stress? |

RE: Does anyone know anything about Chestnut trees? Posted 300 days ago Try peeling back a tiny piece of bark with your thumbnail. If necessary use a knife blade or similar (you can tell I've never even seen a chestnut tree can't you?) |

RE: Does anyone know anything about Chestnut trees? Posted 291 days ago I had a close look at my chestnut tree today. Unfortunately it is very dead. The young branches have shrivelled and there are white spots all over the branches and trunk. |

RE: Does anyone know anything about Chestnut trees? Posted 273 days ago Probably best to do a soil test. Also, all the trees you mentioned are cool climate trees, is it too hot or too dry where you live? |

RE: Does anyone know anything about Chestnut trees? Posted 271 days ago The area I am in should be cool enough in winter. Maybe we get a bit too hot weather in summer, and definitely not a very good rainfall area. This summer has been a pretty good wet one though so it would have been only those few days of really hot and humid weather that had stressed the chestnut tree out. Once established (and it hadn't had time to fully get established yet) the chestnut tree was meant to be quite hardy in our conditions. I bought the tree at a nursery section of a store in Wagga. Maybe this was one of the trees that could have benefited from shade cloth coverage - though the tree was already over 2 metres tall when we put it in. It received no shade at all through the day and had to deal with strong winds regularly. The area around the base of the tree had been well mulched with straw. |
