Bokashi buckets

Posted 800 days ago

What is the general concensus on these buckets, I understand that they simply ferment the waste, but do not turn it into compost. I do not see the point in this, I need a small composting system for my courtyard, I just about cry at the green waste that is going into my rubbish bin but I do not have a place or room for a compost bin.

you can buy a compost bin and put it on the side of the house. worms then do all the work. If you don't have room then you can just did the scraps in the ground just below the surface. this is as almost the same as composting.

It's a good system. I've got one that I use every day.

You can leave it inside, put it in a cupboard or something. It doesn't attract flies or bugs, and it doesn't smell as long as you don't put meat in it. So it saves you a trip outside to a regular compost bin.

Also you get the tea that collects in the bin, which diluted is a great additive to the soil. It adds a high nitrogen fertiliser to the soil. And when the bin is full, you bury it, and since all the scraps are fermented, they take 3 weeks to break down into rich black soil. Its a really good system.

And you also don't need to spend the money on the expensive containers. I use a large mayonnaise bucket with a tap I put in the bottom, and some Styrofoam pieces in the bottom to stop the scraps from clogging up the tap. Then just buy the bran from bunnings and you're all set.
