Pruning my oranmental grapevine

Posted 263 days ago

I have an ornamental grapevine that is quite big. It wasnt pruned last year (1st year in new house) and the grapes hardly formed, so im wondering when to prune and how far back do i prune this year. Any help would be much appreciated.

Your vine has a finite capacity to grow vegetatively (shoots and leaves) and reproductively (fruit) depending on soil conditions, water and nutrient availability as well as climatic/weather conditions. Given adequate water and nutrients the vigour of your vine will depend primarily on the climate in which it is grown. The fact that your vine is not fruiting suggests that it may need to be pruned back a little harder. This means the vine will produce less vegetative growth and hopefully more fruit.
PS- If your vine is growing in a heavily shaded area your fruitfullness will also be reduced.
