Passionfruit flowering like crazy NO FRUIT

Posted 694 days ago

this is summer number two for my huge passionfruit vine. Last summer it was covered in flowers, no fruit so i hand pollinated in case it was too hot for the bees. No fruit. this summer I did the same, the self seeded tomatoes below it fruited over 3 bucket fulls from one plant, the mandevilla vine has long see pods. but Still NO FRUIT on the passionfruit vine. I have also put on three huge doses of sulphate of potash this summer. Still NO FRUIT . there are bees on my garlic chives near by. loads of blossom on the vine and tonnes of cherry tomatoes again. It gets my shower water regularly and is huge. leaves look healthy too. any ideas as to what's wrong. Its a grafted nelly kelly - is that it ? someone said they are best if not grafted. i pull off any suckers . HELP i want a passionfruit.

Hi Jen Juniper,

I don't know if this will help, but I found the following information a while back. It is from QLD but it may be relevant - only you can work that one out as it depends on your circumstances.

There are several reasons for vines flowering but not setting fruit.

1. Poor pollination. This is the main cause and can be due to bees not working the flowers (for example during heavy rain); temperatures being too low or too high for pollination (optimum temperatures for pollen germination are between 20°C and 35°C); or rain directly reducing the viability of the pollen (moisture causes the pollen grains to split).

2. Boron deficiency.

3. Extended periods of overcast weather. This may cause flower drop regardless of pollination problems.

The web address for the article called "Growing Passionfruit - Common Questions"
is http://www2.dpi.qld.gov.au/horticulture/5524.html

I hope this helps!

Hi Jenjuniper, I think it is the grafted vines. I also had this same problem last summer. I pulled them out and put in three non grafted vines and although they are only young new vines and this is the first summer for them, they have started fruiting already and next year I know they will be even better. Also make sure you use the Thrive in the "blue" box, I learnt that from this forum. Good luck.

thanks davejoc. I recon you are right. though I think the companies that graft would say differently. I have now also tried cross pollinating and they are not fruiting with that either. It is such a shame as the vine is so happy and healthy. It is still flowering and looking georgeous
but I am ripping it out!!!!!
whats the best time to replant to get maximum growth fast as i need it as a screen.

It is best to plant in the warm weather of course but what you could do is plant them where you want them to grow and leave the non fruiting vines in until next summer when the other has grown sufficiently to give you the screen cover. Hope it works for you.
