What winter fruits/veges can I plant?

Posted 253 days ago

The previous owner of the house obviously wasn't much of a gardener, and I'm finishing off the garden renovation with a new vege patch that I've dug from a neglected corner of the yard. As I was clearing the waist-high weeds, I found a thriving chilli plant with chillis on it!

I'm a new gardener, and was wondering if anyone has knowledge enough to give me some ideas of what fruits or veges I can plant that will give me a decent crop before we move in December. I live in north Brisbane, and the garden gets good morning sunlight, afternoon shade, and another half hour of sun as it pops over the horizon.

I've mixed in some really good compost that I guess has been sitting in the compost bin for a couple of years. I got a really nice surprise when I decided to throw out whatever the previous owner put in there (assuming she didn't know how to compost) and start afresh, and found some beautiful compost!

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Also, is there any way of getting rid of carpet grass other than digging it out and laying down turf or seed?

I grow lettuce, bok choy, rocket, coriander, silver beet in winter. All of these (except Silverbeet) tend to bolt (turn to seed) in our hot Brisbane summers.

This is a good Aussie site for finding out what grows when in your vege patch, it shows the different climate zones too.

Even the hard, dull, dry ground harbours life - which is brought to the surface with the fresh touch of drenching rain (or the humble watering can).

nice time to grow silverbeet, brocoli, cabbage, cauliflower, ect garlic, leeks, your local nursery person will tell you more, I let a plant of silver beet go to seed so I have in the garden for ever there is a few herbs too that is what is in mine, but I'm sure there is lots more, I also sit the plants in a mixture of seasol for about 10 mins just before planting, it tends to make them sronger and aids them against bugs ect.and spray them with that every few weeks .happy gardening, it is great fun
