Butternut Pumpkins

Posted 655 days ago

Hi everyone, first time user of this great site!

I've got a huge pumpkin vine growing out of my compost bin. My question is this...
Why do I get some flowers that stay flowers and then just die, and why do I get some flowers that grow a pumpkin? Is there a ratio I should expect?
ALSO...i've noticed some of the little growing butternuts start to form, and they get to an inch or two long and then just go yellow and die, whereas i've got one that is well over the size of my hand, weighs a tonne and looks superb!

Any advice would be appreciated! We've also got sweet potatoes and tomatoes growing out of the compost as well!

Thanks!

Rich

A pumpkin vine has both male and female flowers. It's the job of bees to pollinate the female flowers. The female flowers are the ones with a small pumpkin shape behind the flower.

Sometimes the bees fail to pollinate properly and the immature pumpkin at the back of the female flower goes yellow and drops off. It's easy enough to hand pollinate if your bees are lazy.

Hope some of your questions are answered.
