Carrots & Parsnips

Posted 656 days ago

Last year we had beautiful carrots and parsnips. This year just the opposite! They have nobs growing all down their roots, and the Parsnips, although not gone to seed, are very hard. I've only used them in soup in a pressure cooker, don't think they'd be edible any other way. The soil is sandy, with clay further down.
Do you think they might lack some trace elements?

Apparently it has a lot to do with the growing conditions. I grew mountains of them last year and have just put some in now.

I pick them as soon as they get to about 12 cm - thins them out. By the time spring was here some were very woody and huge. Good cellulose in stews LOL. Are they just hard or woody too?

Did they get lots of fertilizer? Or grow very slowly? Did they get enough water.

I notice that someone on the gardening show was growing them in plastic pipes, so they grow down and very long!! ??

Thanks for that. we don't give them much fertilizer as that can cause their roots to fork, they get plenty of water and get thinned out, although we could have done more of this.
Seems like it must be the conditions, as this year we've grown heaps of pumpkins, last year that didn't apply....maybe they take it in turns!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, you never know what the vegies are deciding/discussing between themselves. You would think they would let us minders in on it.

I would like to know why you had probs with noodules etc though. So hopefully some wise person will happen by.

Sounds like Nematodes. They love sandy soil. Did you use the same garden bed as last time? Bet you did. If so you'd best treat for Nematodes before next planting. Don't compost affected plants, either burn or bin. For fertiliser look for N.P.K.5:7:4. Hope this helps a bit.
