Carrots & Parsnips Posted 656 days ago Last year we had beautiful carrots and parsnips. This year just the opposite! They have nobs growing all down their roots, and the Parsnips, although not gone to seed, are very hard. I've only used them in soup in a pressure cooker, don't think they'd be edible any other way. The soil is sandy, with clay further down. |

RE: Carrots & Parsnips Posted 655 days ago Apparently it has a lot to do with the growing conditions. I grew mountains of them last year and have just put some in now. |

RE: Carrots & Parsnips Posted 655 days ago Thanks for that. we don't give them much fertilizer as that can cause their roots to fork, they get plenty of water and get thinned out, although we could have done more of this. |

RE: Carrots & Parsnips Posted 655 days ago Yes, you never know what the vegies are deciding/discussing between themselves. You would think they would let us minders in on it. |

RE: Carrots & Parsnips Posted 653 days ago Sounds like Nematodes. They love sandy soil. Did you use the same garden bed as last time? Bet you did. If so you'd best treat for Nematodes before next planting. Don't compost affected plants, either burn or bin. For fertiliser look for N.P.K.5:7:4. Hope this helps a bit. |
