bolting lettuce

Posted 791 days ago

Hi, I live in a temperate climate(sunshine coast, qld) and have trouble with my fancy lettuce bolting all the time. I have tried to grow under shadecloth but to no avail. I fertilize about once a month. Any suggestions?

You must keep picking it regularly to stop it bolting. Maybe go on a lettuce diet! lol Good luck

AFAIK the Sunshine Coast has a Sub-tropical climate. Even if you're not eating the lettuce, make sure you remove the oldest leaves every so often.

You can extend the cropping-time if you slice off one whole lettuce about three inches above the base. They'll re-grow. Low strength fert. every few days and slight overwatering will stop them bolting early. Deja-vu.

What you need to do is use a high in nitrogen fertilizer I suggest poultry manure apply at a fortnightly rate about half a handfull per sqaure metre and pick leaves that look stressed or wilted on the plant aswell as dead and diseased leaves and if after all that and your lettuce still bolts stop trying to grow it or try a different variety of lettuce some like sub-tropical climates.

Hope That Helps
