peculiar pumpkin vine

I have a jap pumpkin vine growing out of a compost heap. It must have tapped into some special goodness becasue it is what I would think is abnormally thick.
The end of the main vine is about 11inches wide and roughly an inch thick. This is gradually getting thicker over the last 6 foot. I would think free range chickens have contributed to this...

Is this not strange to you? it is flowering but I am curios as to why this is happening. Any comments appreciated.
