Hi,

I'm in Greenwith which is sort of north/north east of adelaide. I started growing organic vegies a couple of years ago. Besides learning about the insects and diseases that will destroy vegies, You will need to find out about the Ph requirements for different vegetables. Before planting you will need about 50% sandy loam 25% compost and 25# manure turned in. If you don't do this, your vegies will be small sickly and spindly Green leafy crops like cabbage, brocoli, spinach and brussel sprouts are planted now and carrots for root crops. You may need to get your garden bed stable with manure and compost first. Don't forget to rotate your crops so thay are in a different garden bed for at least 4 years minimum, otherwise you will get many more pests and diseased. By the way you will need to spray your vegies with preferably organic sprays as soon as you get them and every 2 weeks adter and after rain to prenent severe insect and virus damage

Good luck

Hi I haven't yet got winter veges in yet, bought the seed hope I,m not too late for winter cropping. Currently keeping 8 rabbits of which will gradually eat,& breed.Using their manure and straw for garden bed, certainly pumps everything up, huge in fact. Keep garden bed mulched also. Have chickens that free range and provide eggs and have just put temporary fence around to keep out of my intended vege garden. Really getting into growing oun foodstuffs. Have a good herb garden and about 6 different fruit trees in, not all fruiting yet, but patience. All in average size backyard beleive it ir not.
Planning and patience, mind you husband does most of hard work so thanks to him it is all possible. Anything is possible.

Some vegies are easier to grow than others, but the basics are the same for almost all of them. Lots of water, fertiliser, sunshine. The idea is to grow vegies quickly, for the best tasting, most tender results. As well as growing vegies, include herbs, too. They're terrific value in both the garden and the kitchen.

The current (May 2008) issue of Burke's Backyard magazine has a major story on winter vegie growing, on pages 71-73, that's well worth reading.
