where the vine attaches to the pumpkin wait until that dies and goes brown not the whole plant because not all the pumpkins will ripen at the same time

Hello
I have a problem with my butternut pumpkins. The vine is disease free, organically grown and growing like crazy all over the place and has heaps of fruit growing BUT a few have open splits in them. Is it too much water, too little water, grass growing around them, need a feriliser...? I've looked on the net and I still don't know. Any advice would be greatly appreciated by me, family and friends who are axpecting to reap the rewards.

Hi karenalien. It's probably due to one or two big rainfalls when the pumpkins are almost ready. Not really a worry with butternuts though. You can pick them quite early and store them in the kitchen cupboard. Immature butternuts will continue to ripen if picked early. Enjoy.

Thanks Hutcho, you're a champion. So it wasn't me, it was the rain. I must say I haven't had to water the garden alot lately because of the rain and I feel ripped off because it's one of my few simple pleasures in life. And I do have a big airy cupboard for them to live in so I'll do that. Cheers!
