Bitter oranges

Posted 114 days ago

I have an orange tree that had awful fruit last year, I moved into the house and the fruit was already on the tree, so I don't know how it was treated last year.
This year I have fed it, watered it regularly, the tree seems healthy enough, it has prob too many fruit coming this year, will thinning the fruit make the remaining ones sweeter?
Is there anything else I can do, or is it a case of wait and see?

Thin the fruit when it is about one third formed.Dress with Epsom salts when fruit starts to ripen.10-20g per sq.m.depending on tree size.Best applied as a solution.Guaranteed a winner! All citrus can be treated this way.

Thank you Hutcho, I have just thinned them, but the fruit has only just started to come, will this cause any problems?

The only reason I delay thinning is to ensure that the fruit is at a stage where you can sort of tell the better stuff from the not so better. Also the tree will usually do a bit of self-culling of less viable fruits early on.As fruit starts to colour up check one about once a week for juice content. If dry, give the tree a REALLY big drink around the dripline, but not more than once a week.

I treated my red paw paw trees with Epsom Salts in Queensland. Made them fantastically sweet. Didn't know you could do it to oranges too. Thanks hutcho.

Hi AussieBlonde. The Epsom salts is definitely a once only per crop.Think of it as putting salt on your dinner.A little bit is good, but more can cause problems you jest don't want.If you're getting good oranges already, you don't need it.Good luck.
