Harvesting Rhubarb

Posted 762 days ago

I have been told not to harvest my Rhubarb plant in the first year. Is this correct? Seems a shame as stalks are growing nicely and turning red in colour.

Hi there, yes I heard the same thing but I had some growing and the stems looked too good to leave so I cooked them up and they were yummy. So go for it if they look nice.

Am sure it will be ok for your plant, unless you take all the stalks and leaves. Leave a few. If your plant grows a large flower spike, cut it right back to the soil and your plant should last for years.

I think I have had mine for about 15 years!!

FOR A YUM TEA CAKE:
Mix up a vanilla cake mix (or make your own). Spread half in pan. Cover with 1 cup chopped rhubard - yes raw! Cover with a couple of teaspoons raw or brown sugar and also mixed spice or cinnamon.
Cover with the rest of the cake mix. Top with sugar and spices - BAKE. Very yummy and have a bet with your guests as to what the fruit in the cake is!

Of all the wonderful surprises in life, none is better than seeing that first shoot tear out of the earth and form into a wonderful plant and vegetable.. .
