Tomato soil pH.

Posted 852 days ago

The advice on the info tag of some heritage toms from a very reputable supplier tells me that "lime and fertiliser may be broadcast over the area....the optimum pH is 7. Sort of goes against the grain. Lime and toms? All and any comments and observations welcome. P.S.- they're going very nicely in well composted medium pH5.

Hi hutcho
I looked up my soil testing kit and it did say a little lime is good to sweeten the soil.

however I found this on
http://www.homeimprovementpages.com.au/article/Growin
g_Tomatoes

"Before
you plant your tomatoes, you need to prepare the site. This can be done by digging in generous amounts of cow manure, as well as adding a light sprinkle of potash and a handful of lime for every square metre. If you choose to use mushroom compost, this will do the same thing as the manure and the lime does. Well-drained soil is vital, and if necessary, you can raise the garden bed. The soil needs sufficient amounts of calcium, which is why you add lime to the soil, however, if you already have quite alkaline soil, add some gypsum."

Sounds like you got it right anyhow?

Thanks for that BobbieJ. It's just that a few seasons back I slaughtered a great crop of toms with lime. Should have left well enough alone I guess, but never been known to do that.
