Pruning Grape Vines

Posted 654 days ago

Hi all, I hope someone can help me. I know it is still a little bit early to be pruning my grape vines but I am thinking about it and when the time is right I want to be prepared.

I have three vines that are 2 years old and one that is 1 year old. I have looked on the net and played the videos but I am still a bit worried I will do too much cutting and of course cut the wrong thing. Are there any expert grape vine pruners out there who could help me. I need it layman's terms, if you know what I mean. I haven't had any fruit yet but I am looking forward to next summer with glee.

Last year I think I did it right for the three vines, I had the trunk and two branches coming off it, that is what was left. But now I don't know what I am supposed to cut for this season's prune.

Also, the vine that is only 1 year old has one strong very long branch with just little insignificant small branches coming off it, what should I do there. Thanks in advance.

hi davejoc
Re pruning grape vines, there are several ways you can do this, firstly if you intend to have a vine tree like the vine grovers [small tree like] first year you cut the main trunk about 750mm high, second year you only leave 2 or 3 branches the healthiest ones and cut those ep.75mm allowing 1 or 2 shoots on each.
Or if you intend to grow your vine tree long up on trellies then you leave the trunk long and prune any brunches off it for first year, second year do same as above, the idea is don't leave to many branches as this puts too much strain on your tree, and the fruit may not do as good as it should. [Please excuse my spelling]
give that a go, bye now.

Thank you MHilmi and Ronsnakes, I have pruned them as best I can. I watched the videos but when I got out there I got a bit confused but anyway I think I have done it okay.
Thanks very much for your help.
