Fruit tree in a pot?

Posted 660 days ago

I would like to plant a citrus or other fruit tree in a large pot on a paved area which gets full sun. We live in SE Qld a bit inland and summers can be very hot and winter mornings down to zero and below. I've read about citrus in a pot but has anyone actually had any success with this - or any other fruit tree in a pot? Thank you for any suggestions or tips.

Go for it Akureyri. Citrus will do well in pots in your location. I have had a lemon in a pot for years and I'm in SEQ.

Go for grafted dwarf varieties. They're designed for just that. For something a bit different, a Lemonade tree is highly recommended. Great taste.

If you feel that the afternoon blazing sun is just too hot, wrap in shade cloth just for that hot day.

I wrapped my vegie garden in shade cloth once the temp got over 35 deg last summer and I think it worked a treat.

Just remember that plants in pots need more water and slow release fertiliser.

Yes Lemonade - you can just eat the fruit - yum.

Of all the wonderful surprises in life, none is better than seeing that first shoot tear out of the earth and form into a wonderful plant and vegetable.. .

Thanks everyone. Your help is very much appreciated. I'll definitely be trying it. Autumn is such a great time to be in the garden.

get the biggest size pot you can, I grow 2 types of fig, lemonade, navel orange, and two types of manderine in pots, all growing and fruiting very well, make sure the potting mix is well drained, I drilled extra holes in all my pots and do keep a constant suppy of water up to them,my hickson manderine is in a 600mm ? ceramic pot and has produced so much fruit this year I have bamboo poles under the braches to stop them from breaking, I do fertilise my potted fruit tres more often than the trees in the ground--- remember they will need to be repotted every few years--- good luck
