berries

Posted 744 days ago

We brought some berry tree's/bushes the other week, Blueberry, blackberry and raspberries. I am concern how to plant them, will they grow like vines, or like bushes. Plus how big will they grow in diametre. We have a vegie patch down the back of our yard that is going well, that gets both morning and afternoon sun. Hope that my berries can go in the same area. Any advice is better than nothing please.

Blueberries are a shrub and quite benign. The other two are vigorous spreading vines with millions of thorns. I'm stunned that you could even buy the last two. If you are on ten acres, that's how big they'll grow. Then move on next door. Are you sure they're permitted over there? In N.S.W. blackberry is a noxious weed, in Tassie it's the raspberry that takes over. I'm not entirely sure, but I think raspberry is more a colder-climate plant. In any case, keep the birds off so you get some for yourself, and to prevent seed-spreading across the rest of the state. Sorry to be so negative, but that's just how it is with blackberries on the mainland.

G'day Hutcho,

We live in the south west of WA on a 1/4 acre block.
We brought them from Bunnings Hardware, I was stunned that they are here myself, as I am orginal from Melb, and vaguely remeber stories of people getting wild berries on road trips etc. The blackberry is a thornless type, Rubus Canadensis variety, from what the card says remebering it as advice only, if true a american variety. but does not sucker. and the Rubus idaeus for a better name for the raspberry, I was stunned myself, but thought well if the hardware store is selling them in WA, then they must be allowed.
As I have had to start from scratch when I moved here, leaving all my plants behind being the fruit fly, and yes desease's as well. Hence now I have a bigger back yard I can grow more. thanks for the advice never the less.
