wasabi rhizomes

Posted 151 days ago

I have just watched cook and chef and they visited a wasabi farm in NZ. I am wondering if anyone has ever seen or purchased them. I would love to buy and try!!

I saw the show too but it seems that it grows in wet, cool places. Apparently it is grown commercially in Victoria and Tasmania.

I noted that your in Qld and so am I so I guess we won't be able to grow it anyway.

I couldn't source a nursery stocking the rhizomes anywhere.

Like the bloke on this link, I much prefer the english 'Horseradish' that wasabi is related to and often adulterated with. The trouble with horseradish is that it loses its potency very quickly, especially if heated. I sometimes wonder what exactly is put into wasabi paste, I fear some chemical intervention.

I love poaching very good fish fillets in white wine then removing the fish before it's cooked through, adding crea. and reducing and finally adding grated hoseradish before serving over the fish, (which has been finished in the oven).
