Posted 152 days ago

What is the secret ? i have tried over the past 6 months and all i get is one or two small spuds. The area is a raised bed but with low sun hours facing north. i tried digging a hole and gradually covering the stem as it grew but with no real results. What am i doing wrong ?

Potatoes like it sunny.Do not like frost.Fertilize with a blood and bone mix fertilizer and give them a good dose of potash and water regularly. And keep heaping dirt around them as they grow.Best of luck.Jules

Good advice and do wait til the tops have died off some before 'bandicooting' wont you ;-)

You may have heard of the old 'tyre' method of growing potatoes in a small garden where you keep adding a tyre and lots of mulch as it grows so you get a stack of potatoes?

It's worth notiong that you don't HAVE to use old tyres. You can build up around them with wooden slats; much more attractive.

The next issue of Burke's Backyard magazine (ie, the August issue, on sale Monday July 28) has a major spud-growing feature in it.

Do you allow your seed potatoes to sprout before planting them? This is called 'chitting' and potato growers say that this process promotes rapid growth and better crops.

Your comment about 'low sun hours' sounds like it could be the problem, though. How many hours of sun are you getting each day – at least six?
