What grows well in tomato plant soil

Posted 713 days ago

Hi, I have had tomato plants growing in pots and now that they are done for the season I want to plant something else in the soil. I read somewhere that tomatoes leave a lot of nitrogen in the soil (I may be wrong on this point). I understand that tomatoes do not grow well in the same spot so I wanted to know what plants would thrive in the soil left that might be nitrogen rich? I'm very much a beginner at this so any tips would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance. Sharon

Hi sharonk. You could try Rocket, lettuce, silverbeet etc., or some herbs e.g. parsely, chives, basil. Anything you eat the leaves of. Depending how bad your frosts get, some protection might be needed for lettuce and basil. Push everything along with a good soluble fertiliser once a week. Let's know how it goes, and hope this helps a bit.

Tomatoes are quite hungry crops. If you could let the soil rest somewhere for example mixed in the compost heap. I always try to replace at least part of the soil.

I noticed that if I only add fertilisers even Seasol, there almost always starts some kind of a problem.

Replacing and recycling soil on the other hand seems to revitalise it.
