Loss of Imperial Mandarin tree ?

Posted 716 days ago

I have an imperial mandarin tree in my backyard which has encountered some problems. Since about three years ago and between the months of Jan/Feb the mandarins have been falling off the tree early and without maturing. I have been fertilizing with citrus plus & Nitro phosphate according to instructions. From about two years ago and in the summer time i have been watering the tree with water from the washing machine waste and sometimes from the tap. Previous to this all was going resonably well and was collecting very healthy and abundent crop. Can you kindly advise or afford me some information on what may be happening. Many thanks / (behalf of my father in-law.)

Hi, we have a few citrus trees and to shed fruit in Jan/Feb is surely unusual, it is normal for them to shed what the tree can't handle about late autumn, as we learnt from "the big orange" in Mildura.

You mentioned the tree was previously healthy and productive, so maybe look at what, if anything you have been doing differently. It may be your grey water, the soap in it would be sus.

Cold weather in winter, ie frosts, play a leading role in the quality of the crop, so it may even be a weather issue.

Sorry in my ignorance I don't know where Northmead is, but if you have a Dept of Primary Industries (DPI) I would contact them, their web site will have a "contact us" link.

I have found them in QLD to be very helpful when I've needed them.

I fertilise ours with an NPK organic brew (Kapek) based on chook manure, and about flowering time give them a couple of handfuls of sulphate of potash.

Sorry I can't be more help, hope you find the answer,
