Possums eating tomatoes

Posted 812 days ago

We've been growing our own veges for a couple of months now and have finally got to the stage where the tomatoes are starting to turn from green to yellow. The kids are desperate to taste their first homegrown tomato. Only problem is, the possums raided the tomato bush last night and have eaten all the yellowing tomatoes and left the green ones behind. I assume the green tomatoes will also disappear once they start yellowing. Any tips for keeping the wildlife away from the tomatoes while they ripen on the bush?

This problem crops up regularly here. I don't recall anybody having any other surefire solution other than physical protection with chook-wire or such.

RE: Possums eating tomatoes - Quassia Chip spray

Posted 560 days ago

I have had this problem also but have been able to overcome it quite easily. even with oranges on my tree.

A natural possum deterrent is a Quassia Chips spray. You can purchase the Quassia Chips online from www.herbcottage.com.au (on the Gold Coast), not very expensive. You boil 25gr quassia chips in 200ml water for 30 minutes, strain and add 25ml liquid soap. This is then diluted 1 part to 3 parts water before use. Put in a spray bottle to apply to affected plants and fruit.

I know that if you have possums or rats in the roof you throw in a handful of moth balls - they all disappear in a great hurry. Don't know if this would help with your tomatoes at all.

Of all the wonderful surprises in life, none is better than seeing that first shoot tear out of the earth and form into a wonderful plant and vegetable.. .
