Lettuce Taste

Posted 812 days ago

i have a bumper crop of lettuces at the moment (various varieties. The seem to have a stronger taste than store bought varities, including the cos. We are cutting leaves as we need them and they have not been sprayed with anything at all.

Has anyone else experienced this.

usually good fertilizing and constant water supply keeps the lettuce thick and strong. also selective growing may also have a great deal to this..

Last Summer I let a few go to seed, and to my great surprise they came up in plague proportions and we had fresh ( frost-resistant!!) lettuce all Winter. No snails either. Luxury! Important to keep food and water up to lettuce as dragonace says, or they'll become very bitter tasting.

Quite often homegrown lettuce is bitter when not grown fast with plenty of water, but I find little bit of bitter quite acceptable, maybe because I nibble on Dandelion while tending my little garden.
