All foliage no vegies! Posted 530 days ago We planted cauli, red cabbage and brussel sprout seedlings early June, after preparing a new vegie garden and fertilising with well rotted sheep manure. Everything grew and grew and now we have loads of lush foliage in the garden, but no sign whatsoever of any edible bits. The foliage is almost thigh high. Someone suggested the garden may be too nitrogen rich, if so how do we get rid of the excess before we plant something else? Live in Gippsland Vic, and have garden where it gets plenty of sun and it is good river flat soil. Would love to be eating our own produce by now. Can anyone help? |

RE: All foliage no vegies! Posted 530 days ago Dig-in some straw-type mulch to reduce Nitrogen rapidly or spread on top of soil for a slower draw-down. Or you could plant lots of leaf-crop stuff like lettuce, spinach etc. to use it up a bit. Although, with Spring here, personally I'd leave it as is and start bunging the summer crops in. At least it's heaps better than being short on Nitrogen!Hope this helps a bit. |

RE: All foliage no vegies! Posted 522 days ago We were first time vegie gardeners last year and had a similar problem. If foliage growing was the objective we would have won first prize. Info given to us was to put some potash on the plants. The box is small and the amount to put on is something like 10g to a 9 L bucket of water (directions are on the box). This was to help these plants flower. It worked a treat and with one treatment of potash we eventually ended up with caulies and broc to harvest. Hope this helps. |
