New Vege Garden - Advice wanted please

Posted 542 days ago

Hello,

We are about to start a new vegetable garden. We are putting it down the side of our house as we don't have a big backyard, and the only way to get good sunlight all day is to raise it. First question - is it OK to use treated pine. I have seen timber raised garden beds already made at the hardware, and these are made of timber, but I wasn't sure if the treated pine would be bad for the veges in terms of toxins in your food.

Second question - do you have more luck with seeds or seedlings? I think I'd prefer to use seeds to make it more cost affective, so does anyone recommend those mini greenhouses by Yates to sow your seeds in first, or just put them straight into the dirt?

Thanks for your time.
Sarah.

Well i have no problem seeing raising it as long as you use the non-toxic pine and i have no trouble putting the plants straight in the ground but in winter use seedling trays and germinate them inside where its warm

Trigg...

Hi Sarah,

Those little greenhouses are great if you want to raise your own seeds. Why not plant a few seedlings from punnets while your seeds get going. Bigger seeds can be put straight into the ground. Don't forget to buy a good vegetable mix from your landscape supplier.

There is another post with the treated pine question, also tells you what to look for.
I buy all my seeds from a trusted ebay seller at a $ a packet, all organic too. I germinate all the seeds in my 4 shelf greenhouse i got from bunnings.
Then plant them out. i planted my beans just over a week ago and they are now 15cm tall!!

Thank you everyone for your replies, you have been very helpful. The raised garden bed still hasn't been built as yet (brand new house so lots of landscaping being done so hopefully will get there in next couple of weeks) but we started some seeds going last week and we have lots of shoots coming up, so hopefully by the time we have the garden bed I'll be able to plant the new little babies :-)

Jen, would love to hear who you buy your seeds from on ebay.

Sarah, I am in a rental property and bought 2 rta vegie kits from Bunnings $59each.Made from pine, they screw togetherand are 1m x 1m easy to move around.filled them with compost and manure and my tomatoes were taller than the fence.had no problems with them but need to add more to grow more vegies. best part is I can take them with me if I need to move.

Happy gardening and growing

I want to start a vege garden near some trees. I do not want their roots to interfere. I can put in vertical root barrier to 600mm around the patch.

Do I also need to put in geotextile fabric to line the base to stop tree roots comming from underneath the bed? Or is just lining the sides enough?

Regards,

Helen
